Lyle Lovett and His Large Band
Presented by: Performing Arts Fort Worth
BNSF Popular Entertainment Series
Dates / Times:
Sunday, 08/23/2015 6:30 PM
Information:
A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers.

Lovett has been awarded four Grammy Awards, was given the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award and was recently named the Texas State Musician.

Lovett has been touring in support of his latest album, Release Me, since its release in February, 2012. The album was No. 1 for several weeks on the Americana charts. Produced by Nathaniel Kunkel and Lovett, Release Me represents the end of an era as it was his last record for Curb/Universal Music Group after being on the label for his entire career.

Release Me is quintessential Lyle, mixing a smart collection of originals and songs written by some of his favorite songwriters that show not only the breadth of this Texas legend's deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most infectious and fascinating musicians in popular music.

Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music's most vibrant and iconic performers. His oeuvre, rich and eclectic, is one of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

Information:
"Dave is one of the best guitar players I've ever shared a stage with." - Delbert McClinton

Fort Worth-bred guitarist Dave Millsap returns to our intimate McDavid Studio for a night of fiery blues, soul and R&B.

Millsap spent his early years as a musician in East Texas, playing any gig that would pay. It was in a little club in Nacadogoches that he met Sonny Terry, one of the most famous delta blues singers ever, from the famed Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.

"I played a few shows as a warm up act for them and Sonny's driver had to leave to go back to Philly to visit his sick mother for a while," Millsap says. "So Sonny asked me if I would drive him around in his white Cadillac until his driver got back. We would sit in his hotel room and Sonny would sing, play his harp and stomp his feet while I tried to play like Brownie. Sonny was great and he would sing all these songs and help me along. He must of thought, `This white boy would never be a blues guitar player.'" Millsap has since shared the stage with Bobby Whitlock, Steve Cropper, Chuck Berry , Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, Jerry Williams, Lee Roy Parnell, Albert Collins, Ray Sharpe, Robert Ealey, Bruce Channell, Sam Meyers, Boz Scaggs, Hubert Sumlin, Stephen Bruton , Kim Wilson, Joe Ely and many others.

He spent many years as Delbert McClinton's touring guitarist, which landed him a Grammy nomination in 1989 for Best Contemporary Blues Album, Live In Austin. Millsap has continued his relationship with McClinton, performing on his annual music cruises.

Millsap's first CD, Nothing But Troubles, was done with the help of some very notable guitarist themselves, Ray Sharpe and the late Stephen Bruton.
