Welcome Haochen Zhang back to Fort Worth as he proudly opens the 2010-2011 Cliburn Concerts season!

Since his solid gold performance at the 2009 Cliburn Competition, where he was the youngest performer, Mr. Zhang has traveled the world as a musical ambassador of the Van Cliburn Foundation with performances in China, Germany and Poland, as well as on some of America's finest performing arts series. In the Bay Area, he performed in recital on both the Steinway Series and with the San Francisco Symphony to acclaim. Wrote the San Francisco Examiner: "Haochen Zhang, the 19-year-old pianist who won first prize at this year's Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, is the real deal. With a flawless technique, nuanced sense of timing and phrasing, and huge coloristic range at the keyboard, he is a formidable pianist and compelling artist."

Concertmaster Michael Shih takes the stage to perform the beautiful Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. This musical celebration honors the 300th anniversary of the 1710 Davis Stradivarius, which has been on loan to the FWSO since 1981.

Information:  
One of America's most revered string quartets, the Juilliard String Quartet welcomed Nick Eanet as their new first violinist this season. Their first tour together has been enthusiastically received by critics nationwide, with The Houston Chronicle reporting, "Eanet was an assured, engaging leader capable of meltingly lyrical playing... The three veterans [Ronald Copes, Samuel Rhodes and Joel Krosnick] played as if their musical lives are blooming anew."

The winner of 1978 Naumburg Flute Competition, Carol Wincenc remains one of the world's most celebrated flutists. The New York Times has called her, "an impeccable flute soloist."

Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the 20th century. Inspired by nature, "the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds and the gushing of fountains" are contained within the music. The FWSO also honors Peruvian composer Celso Garrido-Lecca, as he turns 85, with a performance of Retablos sinfonicos.
